“Why am I...?” is sometimes a destabilizing question that holds us back from a deeper acceptance of our identity. A certain amount of reflection is important but suppress the impulse to seek the origin of every thought & feeling within. Take time to step back and
appreciate the whole painting they create. The Rites of Spring is a celebration of the messy unknowable truths within each of us.
The exhibition is a modernist take on rebirth. The visual language is organic with an avoidance of obvious patterns. Goetz (henceforth ‘John’) chooses to emphasize gradients like color, texture, and tone over rigid shapes and structures, playing in the murkier realms that most accurately reflect the spectrum of human experience. What is depicted are human forms and human emotions, although abstracted. There is an acceptance from John for this lack of definition, even pridefulness. These paintings embrace the multiplicity of humanity. They are raw, emotional, and vibrant. They are a testament to the joy of living even when we don’t fully understand it. They are a mature expression of identity.
This work is a necessary affirmation in a time when identity feels less tangible than before. The modern world exposes our self-expression to an abundance of critique, every post and photo poured over and commented upon. This hyper analysis can lead us to second guess what we ought to be sure of. Artists like John tether us down, reminding us to ask the more important question; “Who am I, and how am I valuable?”. It’s critical to accept who we are,
even if we don’t know why. Acceptance of our messy truths is an essential step towards being at peace with ourselves and giving us the confidence to grow.
Consider this question as you study The Rites of Spring; “Who am I, and how am I valuable?”
I am neither critic nor artist, but a friend of John who feels there is value in conversing with his art. I find a deep wisdom within it that I am excited for others to experience.
On behalf of Mr. John Goetz, I am proud to present The Rites of Spring.
