Stilwell's meticulously prepared and finely crafted paintings and objects fall into the genre of OpArt or Neo-Op in so far as he investigates the optical and emotional possibilities of colours and shapes.  The artist uses elemenatary structures and formulas to creat visual experiences that engage the viewer, often triggering sensations of vibration and movement.  In Stilwell's chromatic universe, colour is an active compnent, creating an event rather than an appearance.
