J.C. HEYWOOD lives and works in Kingston, Ontario

BIO

Carl Heywood was born in Toronto, Canada in 1941 and grew up in Chesley, Hanover and Galt, Ontario. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1963, having studied printmaking with Fred Hagan. He lived in Paris for four years where he worked at Hayter’s Atelier 17 printshop from 1967-69. He returned to Canada in 1973. In 1974, he became professor of printmaking at Queen’s University in Kingston and has continued teaching there ever since. During his career Heywood lectures on printmaking in Canada, Britain, the United States, and France. He has also worked at printshops in Germany, Japan, England, France, Scotland and Quebec.

Heywood works mostly in silkscreen, etching, lithography, wood relief and vectography. In the early 1970’s he began to exhibit in many of the International print biennales: in Britain, Yogosalvia, Germany, Japan, United States, Poland and Canada - winning numerous awards. His work has been purchased for several major public collections, notably, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Victoria and Albert, London, the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
